Kilner® Apple and Pear Chutney

Preserve autumnal fruits with this apple and pear relish from Kilner, perfect for adding to meat sandwiches or serving with cheese.

This relish goes well with cold meats or cheeses, the perfect way to use up leftovers for a delicious sandwich!

Makes 2 x 0.5 litre Kilner® Jars


900g cooking apples (preferably Bramley), peeled, cored and diced
600g pears, peeled, cored and diced
500g light muscovado sugar
2 onions, peeled and finely chopped
1 cinnamon stick
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp sea salt
700ml cider vinegar


1. Place all the ingredients in a Kilner® Preserving Pan set over a medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil.

2. Continue cooking, stirring from time to time, until the mixture has thickened. When you can draw a wooden spoon through the mixture, leaving a trail that remains clear for a few seconds before any liquid appears, it is ready. Discard the cinnamon stick and divide between sterilised Kilner® Jars. Store in a cool dark place and use within 6 months.
