Who’s the author? Fliss Freeborn has been writing about food since she was 8 years old. Her first ‘recipe book’ featured dishes likes clotted cream and golden syrup on toast, which she still maintains is an outrageously good snack.  Since 2017, she has been sharing her recipes and humorous takes on food on her blog Student Cuisine for the Gloomy Teen, for which she won the award for best cookery writing at the 2023 Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards. She has also written for the Guardian, Insider and Delish, and is the youngest-ever panel member on BBC Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet.

What’s it about? Do Yourself a Flavour is a cookbook designed to help young people expand their repertoire of recipes beyond instant noodles and beans on toast. Fliss knows the struggles of cooking with and for uni flatmates, with only the budget to shop from the reduced section. She has curated a collection of over 75 recipes to help you cook (and eat) delicious food that doesn’t break the bank or require any fancy kitchen equipment. You’ll find chapters covering speedy meals, tasty dinners, crowd-pleasing feasts, easy sweet treats and bakes, and even a chapter with all the best food for feeding drunk, or hungover, mouths. With plenty of tips and tricks for using up leftovers, putting together quick meals from the fridge, and cooking for a crowd or for the freezer, this is the ultimate companion for any young chef looking to take their cooking to the next level.

Recipes we love: Spinach and Chickpea Curry, Mushroom, Ale & Lentil Pie, and Puff Pastry Pizza Florentine.

Perfect for: Fledgling cooks looking to expand their repertoire of easy and delicious recipes, from uni students to young professionals, or anyone cooking on a tight budget or hoping to reduce their food expenditure.
