Who’s the author? Irina Georgescu is a Romanian food writer and author of two renowned cookbooks, Carpathia (2020) and Tava (2022), which won the 2023 James Beard award for desserts and baking. Her writing and recipes are a love letter to her home country, where she lived for 30 years before moving to Wales.
What’s it about? In Danube, Irina takes us on a journey through Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria to share over 80 recipes for everyday cooking, many of them centred around vegetables, beans and pulses.
The recipes are simple and practical, covering comforting pies and soups, delicious breads and pastries, vibrant vegetable dishes and pilafs and delicate sweet dishes. You’ll also find sumptuous meat-centric main dishes, many of which are traditionally prepared for festive occasions.
With mouth-watering recipes and stunning location and food photography throughout, Danube shines a spotlight on the little-known dishes of Eastern European cuisine that you can recreate in your own kitchen.
Recipes we love: Oltenian Ash Bread, Easter Lamb Stufat with Spring Onions, Potato Stew with Cheese Filo Crust, Sauerkraut with Pork Sausages, and Fig Confiture.
Perfect for: Home cooks and foodies keen to explore the rich history and diversity of Eastern European cuisine.
