Who’s the author? For Mandy Yin, who is Malaysian-born Chinese of Peranakan Nyonya heritage, Malaysian food always brought her joy and comfort, evoking memories of her childhood in Kuala Lumpur. In 2013, she left her career in corporate law to venture into London’s growing street food scene, introducing Londoners to her chicken satay burger.

Her pop-ups became so popular that she eventually established the now-beloved Malaysian restaurant, Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar. Today, she continues to share her love for Malaysian cuisine with the world as the author of cookbooks including Sambal Shiok.

What’s it about? Simply Malaysian is a collection of 80 recipes that take you through the fundamentals of Malaysian cuisine. The book explores the different flavours of dishes from different Malaysian regions, from the slow-cooked curries and stews famous on the main peninsula, to the fresh seafood dishes on the island of Borneo.

The fundamentals of Malaysian cooking comes down to achieving the perfect taste and texture, and Mandy Yin walks you through the whole process slowly with simple instructions and descriptions of each dish.

An authentic representation of Malaysia’s cultural and culinary diversity, Simply Malaysian comprises a range of recipes from the Malay, Indian, and Peranakan Chinese communities. From mouthwatering snacks and slow-roasted meats to the famous spicy laksa noodle soup, Simply Malaysian promises an culinary adventure on every page.

Recipes we love: One Pot Chicken Rice, Black Pepper Beef, Sambal Aubergines, Spicy Tomato Prawns, Nasi Lemak, Beef Rendang, and Spicy Glass Noodle and Prawn Salad.

Perfect for: Anyone looking to recreate the vast and varied flavours of Malaysian cuisine in their own kitchen.
