Pipe & Glass | Pub

1. Pipe & Glass South Dalton, Yorkshire HU17 7PN 

Our Dining Pub of the Year 2015, this is an attractive white-washed inn with a proper chatty bar, stylish bedrooms, a light, airy restaurant overlooking Dalton Park and exceptional food cooked by the chef/patron. Beautifully presented dishes include guinea fowl with crispy leg parcel, devils on horseback and sherry cream and rare breed potted pork with sticky apple and crackling salad and spelt toast.

2. Treby Arms, Sparkwell, Devon PL7 5DD 

Run by MasterChef winner Anton Piotrowski, you’ll have to book some time in advance to get a table in this incredibly popular village pub. There is a small bar with real ales that is used by locals but most customers are here to enjoy the wonderful, contemporary food. Dishes include cocoa venison with colcannon, field mushroom with foie gras and salami and baby gem and roasted line-caught sea bass with sea spaghetti, parsnip purée and cider-braised mussels.

3. Stagg, Titley, Herefordshire HR5 3RL 

Although the food here remains some of the best you’ll find in pub cooking, the bar is at the heart of this top class place with an interesting range of drinks and a genuine welcome. Comfortable bedrooms, a two-acre garden and airy dining rooms with dishes like partridge, sweet and sour parsnips, kale and smoked mashed potato and duck breast and leg with crushed celeriac, carrot and cider potato fondant.

4. The Cock, Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire PE28 9BJ 

A first class, pretty pub with a traditional bar for locals, fresh flowers, church candles and contemporary paintwork in dining rooms and restaurant, lovely staff and impressive, seasonally inspired dishes that include slow-roasted goat shoulder with onion sauce and beef wellington with rosemary, garlic, orange and truffle dauphinoise with salt baked carrots and red wine sauce.

5. Horse Guards, Tillington, Sussex GU28 9AF 

A gem of a 300-year-old inn with beams, panelling and open fires in rambling rooms, cosy bedrooms and a lush, sheltered garden. Delicious food using home-grown and foraged products and dishes such as barbary duck with dauphinoise potatoes and blood orange sauce and sea snail, garlic and chilli linguine.
