Calling all Happy Foodies!

On Saturday, September 28th, The Happy Foodie and Hertfordshire’s Chorleywood Bookshop will bring together some of the biggest names in the food world for a day of cookery, debate, tasting and foodie fun.

The Happy Foodie Festival takes place from 10am to 6.30pm at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth, WD3 4HF.

Visitors will be able to take part in a range of activities, from cookery demonstrations with TV’s Shelina Permalloo (MasterChef) and Michelin starred Michael Caines, to foodie debates with The Times’ Lindsey Bareham, baking supremo Ms Cupcake and restaurateur Alexis Gauthier.

Grill-master Levi Roots will be cooking up a storm, while Bake Off’s James Morton and Lorraine stalwart Dean Edwards will be taking questions from the festival audience.

The day will end with a lesson in The Power Of Positive Drinking from Cleo Rocos (along with a refreshing complimentary cocktail).

The Happy Foodie Festival is a unique chance to enjoy the company of some of the brightest stars of the cookery world in an intimate setting. Day tickets to the festival cost just £25, while individual event tickets can be purchased for £10 each (full schedule below).

Two of the most popular finalists in TV cooking shows share stories and recipes that got them to the top. Bake Off finalist and enthusiastic wearer of fairisle, James Morton joins MasterChef finalist, and now resident chef on ITV’s Lorraine, Dean Edwards to share all the secrets from behind the scenes.

Around the world 11.15am - 12pm

Do you know your sumac from your star anise? Does your food cupboard need spicing up? The experts in making delicious dishes from across the globe are here to help! Stevie Parle from Channel 4’s Spice Trip, Vietnamese street-food sensations Anh Vu and Van Tran, and Comptoir Libanais’ very own Tony Kitous will lead anyone needing a little inspiration on a journey of flavour.

Shelina Permalloo demonstration 12.15 - 1pm

Over 6.5 million people watched her win last year’s MasterChef and introduce us to her brand of flavourful Mauritian cuisine. Shelina Permalloo will be bringing a little sunshine to Hertfordshire as she cooks dishes from her bestselling new book.

Being the very best cook you can be: notes from the insiders 1.30 - 2.15pm

Two of the UK’s foremost foodies share their secrets and tips on how to improve. Michelin-starred chef and MasterChef judge, Alexis Gauthier, tells us how to get the very best out of our food and, in particular, our veg. The Times’ cook, Lindsey Bareham, gives us an insider’s guide to her kitchen and, particularly, her utensils. She tells us why cooking with the right tools can make all the difference.

Food for thought 2.30 - 3.15pm

Horsemeat, GM, organic... It can be hard to keep track of what we should and shouldn’t be eating. We have the experts to distil the headlines and highlight what we should and shouldn’t be looking for. The panellists are Jack Adair-Bevan, from The Ethicurean, food writer and ‘modern peasant’ Jojo Tulloh, and vegan baker Ms Cupcake.

Michael Caines demonstration 3.30 - 4.15pm

Levi Roots demonstration 4.45 - 5.30pm

From his first appearance – guitar in hand – in the Dragons’ Den, Levi’s winning personality and sunny food has brought a taste of Caribbean joy to our dinner plates. Now he’s back, hotter than ever! Levi is getting back to his Roots demonstrating Caribbean – and sunshine – infused recipes for the barbecue and grill.

The Power of Positive Drinking 5.45pm

Cleo Rocos has been described as the essential ingredient to any party, and has spent a lifetime partying with bon viveurs like Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana, Alan Carr and Gore Vidal. Her career in television took off when she co-starred in the Kenny Everett Show, and for her most recent project she launched her own brand of tequila. Cleo will be talking about the benefits of drinking in an intelligent way and will demonstrate recipes for skinny cocktails which are free from sugary additives.
